Today, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite songs that are inspired by wine. Unfortunately, so many of my favorite musicians tend to favor beer, hard liquor, or other substances for inspiration. There are some pretty obvious choices out there, but here I’m opting for a few songs heard less often. These are just a handful of songs on my mind, maybe I’ll post a follow-up later with some more when I round up another good set. Enjoy the tunes and let what are some of your favorite wine songs in the comments below!
Laura Nyro – “Sweet Blindness” (1967) Eli And The Thirteenth Confession
This song is such a joy, Laura Nyro’s voice and talent is so huge, I have no idea why she wasn’t a superstar in her time. I can’t imagine how many people were exposed to wine in the way depicted by this song.
Jonathan Richman – “He Gave Us Wine to Taste It” (2004) Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love
As
This song has been going around the wine circles for a while, but I can’t resist posting this one. It’s a great reminder for wine tasters who forgets that wine first and foremost is a labor of love and meant to be enjoyed, not judged! Jonathan Richman’s songwriting and story telling is so unique, he electrifies every subject he writes about. Also, I am also very excited he is on tour and coming to DC next week! He always puts on a great show, so if you haven’t seen him, definitely check him out!
Yo La Tengo – “Griselda” (1990) Fakebook
This song is actually a cover, of a song by a folk artist Peter Stampfel. Yo La Tengo are one of my favorite bands of all time, and this album is right up there. The song only references wine in passing, but it’s such a great diddy that I has to post this one.
Velvet Underground – “Sweet Jane” (1970) Loaded
Heavenly wine and roses … Wine was obviously not the substance of choice for the Velvet Underground but the song is fabulous.
